Duathlon Race 3 2013 – Joanne Hepburn to Shave Head for Irish Cancer Society

Joanne has made the very “bald‟ decision to shave her head to link in with Today FM‟s “Shave or Dye‟ campaign, the annual fundraising initiative organised the by the national radio station that raises money for the Irish Cancer Society.  Joanne, who works for EquiVet Ireland, will showcase her brave stunt on Sunday March 24th at the final of the 2013 Naas Duathlon Race Series at Punchestown Racecourse, Joanne  will offer the winner of the race, the opportunity to perform the shearing duties.
It is one thing for a man to shave his head and another entirely for a girl to undertake this courageous endeavour. Joanne, who has shoulder length blonde hair, explains why she is willing to lose her head for the Irish Cancer Society, “cancer is one of those tragic illnesses that touches most people in some way. Cancer has affected my own family as my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through treatment a few years ago. Thankfully she is a cancer survivor and came out the other side to tell the tale. I have other close friends who sadly have not been so lucky.” She concludes, “I hope to raise as much money as I possibly can by shaving my head. It‟s not going to be an easy thing to do but at least I know it will grow back and I am in good health. For people enduring cancer treatment, hair loss is only a small part of the bigger picture. I hope people will give generously to this worthwhile charity that has a devastating impact on so many of our lives.”

If you would like to sponsor Joanne‟s brave fundraising feat, visit her charity page by entering her name, “Joanne Hepburn‟ at www.mycharity.ie. You can also contact her on (086) 042 8414 or alternatively email sponsorjoanne2013@gmail.com. Joanne also welcomes spectators at Punchestown Race Course on March 24th. There is a raffle of a cake which Niamh & Catherine Flanagan at The Ivy Cookery School ( http://www.theivy.ie ) very kindly donated as prize for the day, hopefully this will go down well after the race!!

Trax Brasserie Naas Duathlon Series

By some miracle Punchestown racecourse avoided the bad weather this weekend and Sunday morning was bright but sharp for the 1st of the Trax Brasserie Duathlon race series organised by Naas Triathlon Club.

This race series has been growing steadily over the last few years and was sold out last week for the first time in its history. Primarily aimed at encouraging people new to the sport it also has a highly competitive edge at the elite end. This year was no different, Belpark’s James McFadden set a blistering pace on the first run followed closely by local Naas member Mariusz Olejniczak and these two led James Hoare into T1 but on the bike leg Mariusz took a two minute lead over James to allow himself a comfortable second run and finished in a time of 57:02 ahead of McFadden and James Hoare who cane in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the ladies section Caroline Conway led from start to finish and the real battle of the day was between Niamh Stein from Naas Tri Club and Kim Hickey from Pulse. Niamh entered T1 just 7 seconds behind Caroline with Kim close behind but while Caroline extended her lead on the bike leg Kim just edged past Niamh to take 2nd spot entering T2. This set up a tough second run leg for the two girls but in the end Niamh just pipped Kim for 2nd place with only 4 seconds to spare.

This was a great start to the season with a full field and a successful start to the year for many athletes. A special mention goes to all those who took part in their first event, hopefully one of many to come in the future. Race 2 takes place on Feb 24th and places are filling fast so get your entries in soon.
